Ralph McGehee, a 25-year veteran of the CIA, has been compiling the data base for 12 years and it now has eight megabytes of information divided into 30,000 annotated entries separated into 110 categories. CIABASE runs on hard disk IBM compatible and Macintosh computers, and is being reprogrammed to run directly on the new power Macs. CIABASE gives information not only on the CIA, but also on other intelligence entities. Entries cover the period from the creation of the CIA in 1947 to the present, based on information gleaned from over 450 books and several hundred other sources, a variety including the Washington Post, Covert Action Quarterly, and Congressional reports. It is updated regularly. Academicians and activists of various political persuasions rate CIABASE as invaluable, indispensable and an amazing addition to the information world. The search program gives rapid access to specific data - scanning in seconds or minutes the entire collection for word or word-combination plus date requests; e.g., "Covert Action" "Cuba" "93-94." Search results can be displayed, printed, or saved to a file for editing or transmitting.
