Vincent Palamara Archive - Write to Vince at vmplac@telerama.com Three excerpts, Table of Contents from "JFK: The Medical Evidence Reference" by Vincent Palamara 63) Milton T. Wright, Jr. :Texas Highway Patrolman(driver of Mayor Cabell’s car): a) 18 H 802: report dated 11/28/63---“At the hospital we unloaded the Governor first and then the President. Then we were instructed to keep the news media away from the car.”---nothing specific about the wounds; b) 8/28/98 letter to Vince Palamara---"…I do recall helping to move the President from the car to the stretcher. As I recall about a 1/4 [quarter] of his head was missing, mostly to the left of the back of the head. I believe he died instantly from the wound I saw. I don't believe in the conspiracy or more that [sic] one gun theory. This is why. As we were turning in front of the book depositor [sic], the first shot was fired. When the second shot was fired I believed that it came from the book building. I stopped and was looking at the building when the 3rd shot was fired. I did not see the rifle because I was too close to the building and the shooter was inside the building. If you read the Warren Report you probably saw that Mrs. Cabell stated she saw the rifle being pulled back into the building after the 3rd shot. That was impossible because of our position and she was riding in the left rear after the 1st shot. She slid down in the seat with her back to the building. I gave an affidavit to the Secret Service [see reference "a)" above] but my testimony was not usable. Mrs. Cabell was flown to Washington to testify. That's how her husband got to be a Congressman." [emphasis added]; c) 9/3/98 e-mail to Vince Palamara---"As I recall, prior to the President arriving at the airport we were already staged on the tarmac. I do not recall what position I was in at that time but it was not #1[the number taped to his car's windshield]. At the last minute there was a lot of shuffling and I ended up in the 5th vehicle. My vehicle was the last to leave downtown after the shooting because the police set up a road block behind my car. On your 2nd question[asking for more clarity/ specifics], the wound was left ear to back of head, generally." [emphasis added]; ----------------- 3) Dr. Robert Nelson McClelland, Attending Surgeon: a) WR 526-527 / 17 H 11-12 / CE 392: report written 11/22/63---“…a massive gunshot wound of the head with a fragment wound of the trachea…The cause of death was due to massive head and brain injury from a gunshot wound of the left temple.”; b) “St. Louis Post-Dispatch”, 12/1/63---“This [the neck wound] did appear to be an entrance wound.”[another important “St. Louis Post-Dispatch” article, dated 12/18/63: “ Secret Service Gets Revision of Kennedy Wound-after visit by agents, doctors say shot was from rear.”-"[the Secret Service] obtained a reversal of their original view that the bullet in his neck entered from the front. The investigators did so by showing the surgeons a document described as an autopsy report from the United States Naval Hospital at Bethesda. The surgeons changed their original view to conform with the report they were shown." One of the agents may very well have been SA Elmer Moore. RIF#180-10109-10310 is a 6/1/77 HSCA interview transcript of graduate student James Gouchenaur and his 1970 conversation with Moore, who told him that he felt remorse for the way he (Moore) had badgered Dr. Perry into changing his testimony to the effect that there was not, after all, an entrance wound in the front of the president's neck! My initial impression was that it probably was an exit wound, so it was a very large wound.” McClelland drew a picture for the camera demonstrating this right-rear wound; “Almost a fifth or perhaps even a quarter of the right back part of the head in this area had been blasted out along with probably most of the brain tissue in that area…I would estimate that about 20 percent to 25 percent of the entire brain was missing.”; k) “High Treason”, p. 42, l) “The Baltimore Sun” article by Steve Parks ,11/18/79, and m) “The Boston Globe”article by Ben Bradlee Jr., 6/21/81: the right-rear skull defect drawing used in Thompson’s book is accurate and what McClelland “vividly” remembers; n) “Nova”, 11/15/88 (see still photo in “Killing The Truth”)---before AND after viewing the official photos, McClelland places his hand on the right rear area of his head where he saw the wound on JFK and “speculates” that a large flap of skin is obscuring the large wound in the official photos; o) “JFK: An Unsolved Murder”, KRON, 11/18/88 (inc. in “JFK: The Case For Conspiracy” video by Robert Groden; see still photo in “Assassination Science”, p. 43)---demonstrates the right rear of the skull being blasted and the cerebellum portruding from the wound; p) TWO : A)“Conspiracy” by Anthony Summers (paperback, 1989), pp. 484-486 (interviewed McClelland in 1989)---“I don’t think they were trying to cover up the fact that there was a large hole…but that’s what they were doing…they were covering up that great defect in the back and lateral part of the head by pulling that loose scalp flap up. You can see the hand pulling the scalp forward [in the autopsy photo; this is what McClelland said, more or less, on “Nova”]”; “Dr. McClelland says the ‘great defect in the back’ IS visible on some photographs amongst the FULL set of some fifty pictures he saw at the National Archives”; B) 8/29/89 letter to Joanne Braun (“The Third Decade”, March 1991)---sees nothing to be concerned about re: the incision(s) that appear in the official autopsy photos; q) “Inside Edition”, June 1989---McClelland “says the x-rays do not show the same injuries to the President’s head that he saw in the emergency room…I think he was shot from the front…” [see “Conspiracy”, pp. 485-486]; r) “Hard Copy”, 5/21/90: interviewed by David Lifton---more of the same, and does not agree with the official x-rays/ photos: "are not consistent with what I saw"; s) unreleased 4/91 Livingstone video (see “High Treason 2” photo section and Chapter 14; see also p. 118 of “Killing The Truth”[photo of himself also appears in “JFK: Conspiracy of Silence” by Dr. Crenshaw]); t) Livingstone interviews of 7/79, 12/28/88, and 10/6/91 as sourced in “High Treason 2” (1992); u) Portrayed by actor Joseph Nadell in the Oliver Stone movie "JFK" (1991) [see "JFK: The Book of the Film" (1992), p. 156---references 6 H 33, as well as a 1991 interview of McClelland by Robert Groden]---"...almost a fifth or perhaps a quarter of the back of the head---this area here (he indicates his head)---had been blasted out along with the brain tissue there. The exit hole in the rear of his head was about 120 mm. across. There was also a large piece of skull attached to a flap of scalp in the right temporal area."; v) “The Jim Garrison tapes” video 1992---similar to previous interviews: "in the back part of the head" [indicates both the location and the size]; w) 4/29/92 interview with Livingstone (“Killing the Truth”, p. 103)---Knew that LBJ had called 11/24/63 and spoke to Crenshaw; x) JAMA 1992 [inc. a photo of McClelland]--- "Robert McClelland, MD, is a respected surgeon who assisted in the last steps of the tracheostomy on President Kennedy. Interviewed in Dallas, he told this reporter that he maintains a "strong opinion" that the fatal head wound came from the front. Pressed on his reasons, he says, "After I saw the Zapruder film in 1969, I became convinced that the backward lurch of the head had to have come from a shot from the front. Unlike Crenshaw, I do not believe that one can tell the direction from which the bullet came simply by looking at the head wound, as I did, but thewound I observed did appear consistent with a shot from the front. That observation is secondary to my viewing of the Zapruder film, which convinced me that the shots were from the front."; y) 9/10/92: interview by Brad Parker (see the Spring 1997 issue of “Kennedy Assassination Chronicles” in its entirety; see also “The Dealey Plaza Echo”, July 1997 issue, as well as Parker's Lancer 1997 paper entitled "The Subjective Degree of Medical Certainty")---“Well, it was probably really larger than that [Carrico’s 7 centimeters]. I would say that it was more like ten centimeters: the whole right posterior part of the head”; "…the bullet hit from the front, and hit him tangentially in the side of the head, and probably the bullet---it entered somewhere near the front part of the wound that I saw, and blew out part of the skull, and then continued out the back of [the] head at the posterior edge of that wound."; “…there was definitely a piece of cerebellum that extruded from the wound as I stood there holding the retractor while the tracheostomy was being performed.”; described the 1992 JAMA article as a "travesty"; [see also "Fair Play", issue #16] z) letter to Dr. Gary Aguilar; aa) 3/9/92 interview with Gerald Posner for “Case Closed”, p. 312---“I saw a piece of cerebellum fall out on the stretcher”; bb) new interview for Groden’s “JFK: The Case For Conspiracy” video 1993 (see page 87 of Groden’s “TKOAP”); cc) 1/24/94 letter/ drawing to Brad Parker---"Brad, the drawing below is an exact copy, in regard to location and dimensions, of the drawing I made for Josiah Thompson in 1966. [see "Six Seconds in Dallas", p. 140] "; dd) 8/27/98 Joint ARRB deposition (w/ Perry, Jones, Baxter, and Carrico); ee) 9/98 letter to Vince Palamara (written on photocopies of two pages from "Six Seconds in Dallas", inc. his drawing on page 140!)---"The Zapruder film causes me to believe the wound I drew below is an exit wound in the back of the head, not because of what can be seen about the wound per se on the film (I saw this much better on my direct inspection), but because the shot from the front propelled the President's head & body violently backward and to his left-a bullet from behind could not do this in defiance of the laws of physics & motion ("jet effect" of brain is untenable). [regarding his drawing: arrow drawn pointing towards the right rear defect] Right posterior, probable exit wound. [arrow pointing to an upside down "L"-shaped dotted line he drew directly above the defect, in the middle]. Fractured parietal bone protruding up thru scalp accounted for whitish "flap" over the ear in Zapruder film. I looked directly into the wound from a distance of about 18 inches for over 10 uninterrupted minutes and thus saw the wound better than any of the other medical witnesses. I clearly saw cerebellar tissue as well as cerebral tissue." [his emphasis]; also, Dr. McClelland underlined "posterior portion"(Jones [6 H 56]), "right occipitoparietal"(Perry [6 H 11]), "back of the skull" and "right side of his head had been blown off"(Baxter [6 H 40-41]) from Thompson's quoting of various colleagues of his. From his own WC testimony [6 H 33], he underlined "very closely", "right posterior", "parietal bone", "protruded up through the scalp", and "cerebellar".; -------------------------------- 207) Vice/ Rear Admiral (Dr.) Calvin B. Galloway,Commanding Officer of the entire Naval Medical Center [Gallaway; Holloway; deceased]: a) FBI (Sibert & O’Neill) report 11/26/63 [see Post Mortem”, pp. 532-536]---listed as present during autopsy ["Adm. Ball, Esq., and I went to Bethesda Naval Hospital and interviewed Admiral C.B. Holloway [sic], Commander James J. Humes and Commander "J" Thornton Boswell. The interview took place in the office of Admiral Holloway [sic], who is the commanding officer of the National Naval Medical Center, and lasted from approximately 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Commander Humes and Commander Boswell, along with Lt. Col. Pierre A. Finck, who is currently in Panama, conducted the autopsy and Admiral Holloway [sic] was present at all times…All three described the bullet wound on President Kennedy's BACK as being a point of entrance. Admiral Holloway [sic] then illustrated the angle of the shot by placing one finger on my BACK and the second finger on the front part of my CHEST which indicated that the bullet traveled in a consistent downward path, on the ASSUMPTION that it emerged in the opening on the President's throat which had been enlarged by the performance of the tracheotomy in Dallas. " [emphasis added]; f) WC references: 2 H 349 (Humes: recalled Galloway's presence at the autopsy); 18 H 727 (Kellerman's report dated 11/29/63---"…I remained in the morgue and viewed the autopsy examinations which were performed by Vice Admiral Gallway [sic], Commanding Officer, NNMC…Humes…Finck…and Boswell…"); 22 H 96 (Burkley's report: mentioned Galloway's presence); g) mentioned several times by Dr. Pierre Finck during the Clay Shaw Trial, 2/24-2/25/69 [see "Destiny Betrayed: JFK, Cuba, and the Garrison Case" by James DiEugenio (1992), pages 294, 295, 300, 307, and 308; see also "Post Mortem", p. 236]---Question: "Who told you that three shots were heard? Who told you that?" "As I recall, Admiral Galloway heard from somebody who was present at the scene that three shots had been heard, but I cannot give the details of this."; "During the autopsy of President Kennedy there were [sic] Secret Service Agent Kellerman in that autopsy room. I asked him his name. Admiral Berkley [sic], the personal physician of Presdient Kennedy was present, and there was a third person whose name I don't recall who said to Admiral Galloway, who was there during the autopsy, that three shots had been fired."; "I personally talked to Admiral Galloway, who was referred to a third witness present at the scene. There may have been others leading us to the statement that to the best of our knowledge at that time there were three shots fired."; Question: "…you said in your report, "The second wound presumably of entry," and now you state in Court that you are positive it was an entry." "As I recall, it was Admiral Galloway who told us to put that word "presumably". "Admiral Galloway?" "Yes." "Told you to put that word "presumably"? "Yes, but this does not change my opinion that this is a wound of entry." "Is Admiral Galloway a Pathologist, to your knowledge?" "Admiral Galloway had some training in Pathology. He was the Commanding Officer of the Naval Hospital, as I recall, and at that time, in my mind, this was a wound of entry, it just was suggested to add "presumably" this was." "Did he suggest you add anything else to your report, Colonel?" "Not that I recall."; "From what I remember, Admiral Galloway was in uniform."; Finck admitted that Galloway personally ordered changes in the autopsy report after it was drafted!; h) 5/17/78 interview with the HSCA (RIF#180-10079-0460 [see also 7 HSCA footnote 44])---Stated that various enlisted men took X-rays and photographs throughout the autopsy; said that no orders were being sent in from outside the autopsy room either by phone or in person. He said that Pierre Finck, the pathologist with the greatest expertise, seemed to be the person exercising authority and that occasionally some people, such as the senior staff members of the President, were entering and exiting the autopsy room.; recalled a discussion that attempted to determine where the missile that entered the back could have exited [see reference "e)" above]; Galloway could not remember what happened to the tissue specimens and JFK's brain, as well as where these materials were stored between the autopsy and the microscopic examination [see Stover]; i) 6/4/78 interview with David Lifton ("Best Evidence", p. 491[also: there are numerous references to Galloway throughout the book; in particular, see p. 521])---Did not do any cutting during the autopsy: "No, I was not suited up. No, I was just in uniform."; the FBI agents were kept out of the autopsy room for a while : "That's correct…you don't let a whole lot of unnecesary people into an autopsy."; repeatedly said that the Warren Report was correct, yet conceded that "there's certain things that do not make any sense."; j) "The Washington Post", 11/23/63---"…the ambulance containing the coffin sat unattended for several minutes [at Bethesda]. A Navy cordon finally pushed the crowd back about 15 feet from the vehicle. Adm. Calvin B. Galloway, commandant of the medical center, pushed into the front seat and drove to the rear of the Hospital, where the body was taken inside." [Galloway denied to Lifton that he drove the ambulance, but did admit to riding inside.]; k) two references in "The Death of a President" (pages 398 and 416 [see also "Best Evidence", pp. 395-396])---"Admiral Galloway lingered on the walk, detained by General McHugh. "We're going to the morgue for the autopsy and the embalming," Godfrey said. "Mrs. Kennedy doesn't want an undertaker." "We don't have the facilities. I highly recommend a funeral parlor." Godfrey pressed him. "Those are the family's wishes. Isn't it possible?" "it's not impossible," said the Admiral frowning. "It's difficult, though. And it might be unsatisfactory."; -------------------- JFK: THE MEDICAL EVIDENCE REFERENCE: WHO'S WHO IN THE MEDICAL EVIDENCE--- THE PRINCIPAL WITNESSES FROM NOVEMBER 22,1963 BY VINCENT MICHAEL PALAMARA TABLE OF CONTENTS: I.
