WJLA-TV said divers had searched the waters around Cobb Island until midnight Sunday after a passerby reported seeing Colby's canoe. The search would resume Monday, the report said. A Charles County Sheriff's Department spokesman said authorities fear Colby may have drowned because of the Potomac River's strong currents in the area. The spokesman said that besides the capsized canoe, authorities found a partially eaten meal in his home and a computer that was still on. Former President Richard Nixon chose Colby to head the CIA in 1973 and he served until1976. Colby was in charge of the CIA's Saigon operations during the height of the Vietnam War and headed the "Phoenix Program," which reportedly resulted in the deaths of some 20,000 Vietcong at the hands of American assassins. --------------- end ---------------
