- Before Summit County was formed in 1840 Portage Township belonged to several other counties. The date of 1800 has been used as a reference point since it is close to the 1803 date when Ohio became a state.
1800 - 1808: The area of Portage Twp was in Trumbull County.
(Trumbull County was established in 1800.)1808 - 1812: The area of Portage Twp was in Portage County.
(Portage County was established in 1808.)1840 - Present: The area of Portage Twp is in Summit County.
(Summit County was formed in 1840.)

FIVE POINTS CEMETERY:
No information. Supposedly there was a cemetery near Five Points Shopping Center, near W. Exchange St.GLENDALE CEMETERY:
a.k.a. AKRON RURAL CEMETERY.
Established in 1839. Located at 150 Glendale Ave, Akron OH 44302. West of W Market Street at Glendale Ave and Maple Street, near downtown Akron. Burial information is at the cemetery. The Chapter has copied the burial records and is in the process of computerizing them for publication.JEWISH ORTHODOX CEMETERY:
a.k.a. SHERBONDY CEMETERY
Located on White St, off of Wooster Ave, between Tressel and Fess Ave. Close to the Wooster Hawkins Plaza.MT. PEACE CEMETERY:
a.k.a. GERMAN REFORMED CHURCH CEMETERY
Located at 183 Aqueduct St; Akron OH 44303. Off of W. Market St near St Vincent's Cemetery. Burial information is at the cemetery.Selected gravestone inscriptions from the old section were published in "Ohio Records & Pioneer Families" Vol 18, #1, pp 35-41, by Esther Powell.
ST. BERNARD'S CEMETERY:
Located on South Maple St, near W. Exchange St, adjacent to
Glendale Cemetery. This was the 1st German speaking Roman Catholic Church in Akron. The church was established in 1861 and the cemetery in 1865. Prior to that the congregation belonged to St Vincent's Roman Catholic Church.Published in 1991 by the Summit County Chapter, OGS in the book: "Saint Bernard's Catholic Church Akron, Ohio Cemetery Inscriptions and Funeral Records 1863-1983."
ST. VINCENT'S CEMETERY:
Located at 500 W Market Street, in Akron, between Balch St and Rhodes Ave. The oldest Roman Catholic Church and dates back to 1837. Selected gravestone inscriptions were published in the Chapter's newsletter "The Highpoint", Mar 1991,pp 31-36.SPICER BURYING GROUND:
Was destroyed to make way for Buchtel College, forerunner of the University of Akron. Many bodies were moved to the Rural Cemetery now known as Glendale Cemetery.Notice to our readers:
