- Before Summit County was formed in 1840 Franklin Township belonged to several other counties. The date of 1800 has been used as a reference point since it is close to the 1803 date when Ohio became a state.
1800 to 1803: The area of Franklin Twp was in Trumbull County.
(Trumbull County was established in 1800)1803 to 1808: The area of Franklin Twp was in Columbiana County. (Columbiana County was established in 1803.)
1808 to 1840: The area of Franklin Twp was in Stark County.
(Stark County was established in 1808.)1840 to Present: The area of Franklin Twp is in Summit County.
(Summit County was formed in 1840.)

Inscriptions for several cemeteries in this township can be found in the book: "Summit County Cemetery Inscriptions, Volume 2" which was published by the Summit County Chapter, OGS. This book also includes burials from Green Township.
CLINTON CEMETERY: (published in Vol 2, pp 4-27)
Located in Clinton east of S Cleveland-Massillon Road (old Rt 21) off of Main Street. The Clinton Cemetery Association is the owner of this cemetery which was a township cemetery until 1916 when it was transferred to the Clinton Cemetery Association. Unfortunately, no records prior to 1916 can be located.GRILL CEMETERY: a.k.a. BERGNER CEMETERY (published in Vol 2, pp 28-34)
Established before 1840. Located at 6385 S Cleveland-MassillonRoad. On the east side of S Cleveland-Massillon Road (old Rt 21) south of Grill Road at Franks Road. It bears the name of John Grill who owned the land on which the church now stands and is adjacent to St. Peter United Church of Christ. Records indicate that this cemetery was never owned by the church but was first a private family cemetery, then a community cemetery, and then was finally turned over to the township. It is owned by the Franklin Township Trustees and is still an active cemetery.HIMELRIGH CEMETERY: (published in Vol 1, pp 94-95)
An abandoned cemetery that was located on the north side of Vanderhoof Road west of the railroad tracks. The earliest gravestone is dated 1831. There are no known records but there mayhave been 50-60 graves.KYSER CEMETERY: a.k.a. SWIGART CEMETERY (published in Vol 2, pp 39-41)
Located on Swigart Road west of Manchester Road. This cemetery came into use by at least 1848 and is now maintained by the township trustees.MANCHESTER CEMETERY: (published in vol 2, pp 42-70)
Burials date to the early 1800's. Located in Manchester on the south side of West Nimisila Road, west of Manchester Road. The Franklin Township Trustees own this 87-acre cemetery. An 1880s brick church located in front of the cemetery was set on fire by its pastor in the late 1980s and the damage was so severe that the structure had to be torn down. Township trusteees purchased the property which is now part of the cemetery. The gravesiteof Elizabeth Palmer, who died in the early 1800s, was located on a farm around which the cemetery eventually grew.MATTHIAS DAVIS CEMETERY:

Originally on the Matthias Davis farm which is now private property. In 1939 there were only 3 gravestones and this site has probably disappeared.ST. NICHOLAS CEMETERY: (published in Vol 2, pp35-38)
Established in 1935. Located on the west side of S Cleveland-Massillon Road (old Rt 21) south of Grill Road at Franks Road. This cemetery was started in 1935 with the transfer of 5.25 acres from Edward D Woods to St Nicholas Greek United Catholic Church.Notice to our readers:
