Dictionary of Electronic Genealogy

 
     Sometimes messages on genealogical mail lists sound as if they are written in a foreign language. Here is a dictionary of acronymns  and crazy phrases you may encounter:

Ahnentafel = literally means "ancestor table"

AGLL = American Genealogical Lending Library; a subscription organ ization that lends genealogical microfilm and microfiche to libraries and individual members.

AHRC = In Ohio, the American History Research Center libraries that are depositories for old government records.

AIS = Accelerated Index System, a microfiche collection of (mostly ) census index data, mostly 1800-850, that permits a searcher to look nationwide or through groups of states at one
time (available at some FHCs and at other libraries).

BTW = By the way.

CDROM =  Compact disk, read only memory.  A disk like those that you see at audio stores, but now made for storage of vast amounts of data--as much as 660 megabyes.

CIG = Computer interest group.

COLS = Columbus, OH.

DOS = Disk operating system.
 

FGS = Family Group Sheet.  A form often used to record data for parents and children in a uniform format.

FHC = The Family History Center of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints or any of its branch centers.

FTM = Family Tree Maker, a genealogy software program. or FTW Family Tree Maker for Windows.

FTP = File transfer protocol. Used in obtaining files electronically.

GEDCOM = A specially formatted computer file of genealogical data that can be generated by some programs for exchange of data between persons having the same software or between different versions of software that recognize the generic format.

GPC = Genealogical Publishing Company, Baltimore, MD>

<grin> = A message insert to indicate a tongue-in-cheek remark.

GRD = "Genealogical Research Directory", an annual publication tha t lists persons who are researching various surnames.

HENRY = A numbering system for genealogies developed by Reginald Buchanan Henry. See 6. Numbering Systems under the "Tips For Beginners" menu.

IGI = International Genealogical Index, an event database of the F amily History Center listing thousands of birth and marriage records.

IMHO = in my humble opinion.

ISBGFH = International Society for British Genealogy and Family History.

LDS = Latter-day Saints, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Modem = A device that lets your computer "talk" with other computers over telephone lines. Modem stands for MODulate and DEModulate which technically means a modem converts digital
signals to sound and vice versa.

MRIN = Marriage record identification number used in Personal Ancestral File.

NEHGS = New England Historical and Genealogical Society (founded 1844).

NGS = National Genealogical Society; a national organization for genealogists; holds an annual national meeting; publishes as genealogical newsletter and scholarly quarterly; sponsors a
borrow-by-mail library, and so forth.

NGS-CIG = The computer interest group of the National Genealogical Society.

OGS = Ohio Genealogical Society.

OGS = Ontario Genealogical Society

OHS =  Ohio Historical Society

PAF = Personal Ancestral File, the genealogy program of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

PC = Personal computer.

PERSI = Periodical Surname Index compiled by Allen County Public Library at Fort Wayne, IN.

RDF = Research Data Filer of Personal Ancestral File.

RIN = Record identification number used in Personal Ancestral File

SASE = Self-addressed, stamped envelope.

TANSTAAFL = There ain't no such thing as a free lunch.

VR or VRs = Vital Records; primarily official registers of
 births, marriages, and death.

WRHS = Western Reserve Historical Society in Cleveland.
