Status:Active
Size:6.22 acres
Established:1836
History:While the earliest known burial in this cemetery dates from 1824,
it was not until 1836 that Herman and Mary Bronson sold the original plot of ground to the Trustees of Boston Township
for the sum of $1.00 for the purpose of providing a "public burying grounds". As part of their initial agreement with
the Trustees, the Bronsons retained the right to graze cattle on any part of the cemetery that was "uninhabited"; in 1850,
the Bronsons re-deeded the land to the Trustees minus the grazing rights. The striking Boston Township Soldiers' Monument,
donated in 1889 to the township by Col. Arthur Latham Conger and his wife, Emily Bronson, was moved from its original
location at the intersection of Riverview Road and Route 303 to the cemetery in 1932. On the base of the monument are
the names of 141 local men who served in the Civil War.
NOTE: A project to update earlier unpublished readings from this cemetery is underway. This will be published once completed.
