Interesting Facts: Among those buried here is US Army 1st Lt. Dwite H. Schaffner, who was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor "for undaunted bravery, gallant soldierly conduct and leadership in World War I.




History: Included among those interred in this large cemetery is Dwite H. Schaffner, a veteran of World War I. He is one of three known Congressional Medal of Honor recipients buried in Summit County. On 28 November 1918, near St Hubert's Pavilion, Boureuilles, France, First Lieutenant Schaffner led his men through an initial attack followed by three counterattacks. His efforts to wound, capture, and interrogate the enemy officer involved enabled his men to maintain their advanced position for 5 hours despite being surrounded on three sides by enemy forces.
